Bellarmine College Prep Ice Hockey

High School Hockey growing in Bay Area

As a graduate of Bellarmine (1995), I consistently scan the Mercury News for articles about my beloved alma mater. Known for our solid sports program (especially soccer), Bellarmine has always offered numerous sports to their students. Unfortunately for me, ice hockey was not an option when I was there, but things have changed.

Little over a week ago, the Bellarmine Bells took on the Valley Christian Warriors at Logitech Ice in front of roughly 750 fans. It was a big moment for Bay Area High School hockey; it marked the first time that two high schools met on the ice with players coming strictly from each respective school. Though Bellarmine lost by a score of 8 - 5, it is nice to know that students now have the option to play organized high school ice hockey in San Jose.

When I was at Bellarmine, I recall playing a lot of roller hockey with my buddies, but never ice hockey. In order to play ice, I would have to find pick-up games on the weekends. Back then, I was one of only a handful of people that actually played on ice. Now, the game has taken off and Bellarmine has a team...only 12 years too late for me. (If any of you current Bells are out there and reading this, please contact Coach Mike Yost and ask him to send me a jersey that I can sport when playing pick-up...it would be much appreciated!)

Nevertheless, I am excited about Bay Area High School Hockey. With a larger following, maybe we will start to see a lot more Californian representatives in the NHL. In fact, maybe we will see a San Jose native play in a San Jose Sharks jersey one day. That would be a big moment for one young hockey player and a fantasy come to life for many of us former high school students.
