Sharks vs Avalanche - 3.18.07
Sakic's four assists ends Sharks' winning streak
Denver, CO - On Sunday evening, the San Jose Sharks lost in OT to the Colorado Avalanche by a final score of 4 - 3. Though Team Teal had a one goal lead going into the 3rd period, the Avs came back to steal the two points that were up for grabs. Evgeni Nabokov did his best by stopping 36 of 40 shots on goal, but it was not enough to extend San Jose's winning streak to five.
Joe Thornton scored the first goal of the game on the power play; his 20th of the season. However, the lead did not last as Colorado scored a power play goal of their own, during a penalty on Mark Bell, less than four minutes later.
Early in the second period, Milan Michalek scored a beautiful goal to regain the lead. On a pass from Thornton, Michalek cruised into the zone and let loose a wicked snapper that went top shelf. Just a few minutes later, Bill Guerin continued his hot streak by scoring an even strength goal extending the lead to two goals. Unfortunately, before the end of the second, the Avs were able to get one back off the stick of John-Michael Liles.
For the majority of the third period, the Sharks were able to keep the Avs scoreless. However, with less than seven minutes left in the game, the Avs tied the score. Andrew Brunette put in his 25th of the season giving assists to Ken Klee and Joe Sakic. At this point in the game, the Sharks should have been in control, but were not able to shut things down...this brought the game to overtime.
Nineteen seconds into the extra period, Milan Hejduk took a pass from Sakic and ripped it top shelf over Nabokov's shoulder. The power play goal was scored with Jonathan Cheechoo in the box and it brought a very quick ending to a disappointing game for the Sharks.
Overall, it was frustrating to see the Sharks give up the lead and let the Avs come back. For the first time in five games, the Team Teal looked average. Granted, they are coming off of a four game winning streak, but there is something disconcerting about losing to a team not currently within the top eight of the Western Conference.
