Sharks vs Oilers - 3.11.07
Nabokov stays hot, Oilers stay cold
San Jose, CA - On Sunday afternoon, the San Jose Sharks defeated the Edmonton Oilers by a score of 3 to 0.
Steve Bernier scored a 1st period goal, giving Team Teal the early lead. Though the Oilers had a number of injuries and were all struggling with the flu, they kept the game very tight up until the 3rd period. With less than four minutes remaining in the game, Kyle McLaren blasted a slapper over Roloson's shoulder to extend the lead to two. With little time left, the Oilers pulled Roloson which eventually led to an empty-netter scored by Matt Carle; his 10th on the season.
Evgeni Nabokov remained scorching hot and recorded his 7th shutout of the season, 34th of his career. Nabby only had to stop 22 shots on the night to get his 3rd shutout in the last four games. It appears that increased ice time, due to Toskala's groin injury, has Nabokov running strong. When interviewed after the game, Nabby gave credit to both the defense and the forwards; all units were doing a great job of limiting Edmonton's chances and clearing out the front of the net.
On a night where everyone else won (Ducks, Stars, and Wild), it was crucial that the Sharks keep pace by getting the two points. The entire team seemed to be energized and willing to go to the body; especially the line of Clowe, Goc, and Bernier. Rivet continues to play well, recording an assist and getting a lot of quality shots on net. Unfortunately, Guerin still remains scoreless.
For the Oilers, this was their 7th consecutive loss. I'm not going to lie, I don't feel bad for them at all given our history from last year's playoffs. In fact, I love that Raffi Torres got so close to kissing the cup, but now sits on a terrible team without hope for a championship any time soon.
