My Worst San Jose Sharks Experience Ever
Sharks vs Ducks - 4.5.07
The amazing game last night had so many different elements to it that I don't know where to start. I could look at how the Sharks came back to win it in OT, I could also focus on the fight between Ryane Clowe and Shawn Thornton, or maybe discuss the move Coach Ron Wilson pulled to put Selanne in the box for an illegal stick. Better yet, maybe I can blog about how both goalies made a number of big saves in critical moments, including the Shootout. Well, by this time, I'm sure there are a ton of articles and posts out there talking about the aforementioned topics. Consequently, I’ll just share how the biggest game of the regular season was my worst San Jose Sharks experience ever.
If you've read my post about pet peeves, then you know that I hate missing a minute of Sharks Hockey. Unfortunately for me, I knew that I was going to be stuck at work till late. As a result, I asked my girlfriend to TiVo the game for me even though she was late and rushing to make our dinner appointment that I had to bail out on. Luckily, she was willing to help me out. Roughly around 6pm, she called me to let me know that the game wasn't televised. What?!? Quickly, I went to SJSharks.com to see what was going on...much to my dismay, it was an FSN+ telecast and I don't get that station. How could I have let that one get by me?!?
So there I was at work, staying late and missing the game...needless to say, I was not happy at all. So I went to my best option...listening online. That worked for a little while and I was able to catch the first period, but the player kept "buffering" and my computer must have suffered 20 "mini-freezes". Not wanting to stay at work till midnight, I decided to tune in to Dan Rusanowsky and Jamie Baker on my little crappy clock radio. As you could imagine, the reception was terrible...I spent about five minutes trying to get the tuning just right: a sixteenth of an inch too far to the left, I would get a Spanish radio station...a sixteenth of an inch too far to the right, I would get a cheesy soft rock station. Finally, I was able to get just enough reception in time for the second and third periods.
Every passing minute, I grew more and more sick of the fact that I was still at work, but at least I had the game on. It had been a while since I listened to a game on the radio, so I deluded myself into thinking that this was a nice refreshing change. Besides, the Sharks had just comeback and were headed into OT.
It was after 9pm, I was almost ready to go home from a super-long day of work, and things were starting to seem brighter for both me and the Sharks. I took a short break from my work and decided to listen to the overtime period. Nabokov sounded like he was having a great game and Rusanowsky was doing a solid job of bringing the game to life. Unfortunately, the Sharks weren't able to put the Ducks away in overtime, but the shootout was on its way. You could imagine my excitement; here was a chance to beat the Ducks and gain momentum for the playoffs. Granted, I was still at work and listening to a small clock radio with bad reception, but at least Team Teal was getting it done.
And then it happened...the small clock radio went silent. Did it break?!? Did the dial move?!? What was going on?!? Frantically, I tried to adjust the radio to no avail. I then tried to get the online Sharks feed going again...buffering...buffering...then connected. More silence?!? So I tried to get the Ducks feed...buffering...buffering...and a voice from my computer said, "and the Sharks complete their comeback by winning it in the Shootout." I had missed it...the perfect ending to my miserable day.
Some may say, "at least they won." However, I was in no mood to hear that. Tired and upset, I jumped in to a cab to go home...the driver had the post-game going and I asked him, "who scored in the shootout?" With a gruff and angry voice he answered, "Hell if I know. The damn radio went dead." I couldn't help but laugh to myself...at least I wasn't the only one affected by what I will refer to as the "KFOX Debacle".
At any rate, San Jose will get a boost from this game and hopefully tear through the playoffs, but last night will definitely go down as my worst San Jose Sharks experience ever.
