The "Hey" Song is Back

Goal celebration song returns to the Tank

An article in the Mercury News verified that the "Hey" song will be used once again to celebrate all of Team Teal's goals at home this year. Many fans, including myself, were sad to see it go last year. However, after reading about the circumstances, I now understand.

All of last year, San Jose Sharks fans celebrated goals by rocking to Greenday's "Holiday". It worked, but for some odd reason, it just didn't feel the same. In years past, the Tank enjoyed Gary Glitter's ""Rock 'n' Roll Part II", and to be honest, I really associated games at the Tank with that song. However, the Sharks, along with a number of other NHL teams, decided to dismiss the celebration song in response to Glitter's molestation conviction in Vietnam last year...a logical decision.

But this year, thanks to the fans, the song is back. The Sharks organization listened to the feedback received from fans and decided that the hockey experience at the Tank was tied to "Rock 'n' Roll Part II". I guess I wasn't the only one. Fortunately, Sharks officials say that the celebration song will be "from an organist". As a result, Glitter will not be receiving any royalties.

It's funny, but I rarely think of all the numerous factors outside the Sharks organization that potentially influence all of their decision making. At any rate, it will be nice to pump my fist in the air and yell "Hey!" again...

The version of the song played at the Tank always was from an organist so it was rather stupid of them to change it in the first place.
