Avalanche Embarrass the Sharks

Colorado whips San Jose, 6 - 2

For a team that is favored to win the Stanley Cup this year, the San Jose Sharks sure looked like crap yesterday. I understand that the season just started, and that the Sharks were handed a tough schedule up front, but their performance Sunday afternoon was just plain bad.

There weren't many good things to take away from Sunday's game; however, I would be wrong not to note Ryane Clowe's performance. Number 29 accounted for all of San Jose's offense and it was good to see him putting the puck in the net. Hopefully, this will get the big winger going. Also, I was glad to see Douglas Murray drop the gloves again. The large defenseman has been showing a lot of toughness so far through three games and should be rewarded with more and more playing time. Other than these two players, the rest of the team had forgettable performances.

Unfortunately, the powerplay continues to struggle, especially during key situations when a goal could really change the momentum of the game. On top of that, the whole team just looked tired. I know that this is the third game in four nights, but the Sharks are young and it's only the first week of October. Besides, even if San Jose was tired, there is no excuse for giving up six goals. I don't care if we were playing Gretzky's Oilers from the 80's...giving up six goals is simply embarrassing and should never happen.

I'm trying not to be too critical so early in the season, but I just had high hopes for this game. Of the first three matches, I figured that this one was going to be the biggest test. It was against a team who is a cup contender, and more importantly to me, it was against Scott Hannan. I'm still a little sour that he was so eager to leave San Jose during the offseason. I understand why he did it, but as a Sharks fan, I wanted to see him lose yesterday and realize that San Jose was where he should be. Instead, he probably feels like he made the right decision.

Power play looked overly cautious and just plain disorganized at points. Hoping for better performance against the Blackhawks.
