Sharks Win Back-to-Back

Sharks 4, Flames 1

On Monday night, San Jose may have played its strongest game since the season began nearly a month ago. Of course, I didn't get to see it as it was a radio-only game. Weaksauce. Fortunately, I was able to see highlights of all four goals on NHL TV.

It has been a while since I've listened to a game on the radio, but it was nice to hear both Dan Rusanowsky and Jamie Baker over the airwaves. From their commentary, it sounded like the Sharks finally put on a good show.

Again, Evgeni Nabokov was solid in net making 18 saves on 19 shots. Unfortunately, Nabby was only 2:33 away from recording back-to-back shutouts before the Flames scored, but I'm sure he was happy to get the win.

As for the offense, it sounded like everything was clicking. In the first period, Ryane Clowe scored his third goal of the season, giving assists to Jeremy Roenick and Joe Thornton. This goal was the only tally of the first period, but the Sharks were able to generate a total of 12 shots on goal.

At 7:16 of the second period, Milan Michalek showed his speed and skill by scoring a shorthanded goal. On the play, Milan picked up the puck off of Alex Tanguay's turnover and streaked down the boards towards Miikka Kiprusoff. With a defender draped over him, Milan was still able to get off one shot and then another off the rebound before scoring his 5th goal of the season. Roughly ten minutes later, the Sharks struck again when Steve Bernier scored his 2nd goal of the season giving assists to Craig Rivet and Matt Carle.

The final Sharks goal was scored again by Michalek at 5:33 of the third period. This goal was the nail in the coffin for Calgary as this gave San Jose the three goal lead. For the remainder of the game, Team Teal played a defensive game and did not put any more shots on goal.

Overall, the Sharks seemed to have soundly beat the Flames using their size, speed, and skill. With the next few days off, San Jose will have the luxury of preparing for their rematch with the Detroit Red Wings. This time around, look for the Sharks to come out of the gates fully energized...which hopefully will lead to more checks, scoring chances, and goals.
