Sharks Win Two in a Row
Sharks 2, Penguins 1 SO
Well, the San Jose Sharks sucked in New York going 0 for 2 against the Rangers and Islanders, but it sure seems that Team Teal likes playing in the great state of Pennsylvania. After dueling with the Philadelphia Flyers and skating away with two points, the Sharks rode into Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins. This game took a little bit more work, but the results were the same...San Jose leaving with two points for the standings.
The game lacked scoring early and was a bit boring until the third period when Number 14 scored for the Sharks, grabbing the 1 - 0 lead. On the play, Joe Thornton skated through the neutral zone using some nifty stick handling to avoid the opposition. Then, at the Penguins blueline, Jumbo Joe found a streaking Cheechoo on the near side. With a quick burst of speed, Jonathan leaned in and made a strong move across the top of the crease. Though a defenseman was on his back, Cheech wass able to put the puck in on the near side.
Later in the period, at 10:02, Pittsburgh tied up the game on the powerplay when Erik Christensen scored his 9th goal of the season. Fortunately, San Jose was able to survive the momentum shift and get the game to the shootout. Normally, this would be a bad thing for the Sharks, but this time, Team Teal got it done.
Notes:
- Jonathan Cheechoo continues his hot streak by scoring his 18th of the season at 3:10 of the third period.
- Evgeni Nabokov looked strong in net stopping 20 of 21 shots. More importantly, Number 20 looked strong during the shootout.
- All three Sharks scored in the shootout (Pavelski, Cheechoo, Roenick)
