JR's Coming Back Next Year
Veteran looks to return for 2008 - 2009 season
Well, it looks like Jeremy Roenick is going to postpone his retirement for at least another year. After coming back and having a solid season for the San Jose Sharks, JR has decided that he isn't done playing hockey...to be honest, I'm glad he's sticking around.
JR was one of the best surprises of the year for me. I expected him to help mentor the young guys, provide some leadership in the locker room, and chip in a goal or two. However, I had no idea that he would be such an impact player on the ice as well. In fact, as I mentioned in a previous post, I think Roenick's performance this year was deserving of a Masterton Trophy nomination. The number of game winning goals he scored this year alone should qualify him...
At any rate, I think that having JR stick around is important. I'm not sure who the new coach will be, but having a veteran presence, that is consistent from last year, may help make the transition easier. Besides, what team doesn't want a guy that:
- scores goals
- provides leadership
- rallies the troops
- takes the brunt of media scrutiny
- calls it like it is
- wants to win a cup
