Sharks Looking For New Coach

Ron Wilson fired

It was announced today that Ron Wilson had been relieved of his head coaching duties for the San Jose Sharks. The only thing surprising about this move is how quickly it happened and not the move itself. In past years, Team Teal's management team usually took a number of weeks off after a playoff elimination before making any moves or announcements. However, this time around, President Greg Jamison didn't wait to pull the trigger.

Almost exactly one week after losing their final playoff game, the Sharks decided that their most winningest coach in franchise history was no longer capable of leading the charge for the cup. In six years, Wilson won two Pacific Division championships and even reached the 3rd round of the playoffs in 2004. However, as many would agree, it simply wasn't enough.

I don't think that Wilson is the sole reason for the Sharks' inability to go deep in the playoffs...a lot of blame can be spread around the locker room. However, I believe he is the easiest one to point the finger at. If you look up and down the lineup, San Jose seems to have almost all of the parts needed to bring home a cup...minus a few players here and there...we really are close. At the very least, this current roster should have been good enough to make the 3rd round and this may be the reason Wilson is gone.

Sharks fans are looking for a cup...looking for something to change...and Jamison knows that. Is this the right move? Only time will tell, but at the very least, it feels like something is being done. Let's hope that it's not just a show and that positive change is truly up ahead.

Note: Unfortunately, Jeremy Roenick was not nominated for the Masterton Trophy this year. The three finalists are Fernando Pisani, Jason Blake, and Chris Chelios. Blake and Pisani had big personal obstacles to overcome and are deserving of the nominations. However, I personally think that JR deserves Chelios' spot...granted, Chris has a lot of years and a lot of heart, but so does JR...weaksauce.
