Sharks Looking For New Coach

Ron Wilson fired: It was announced today that Ron Wilson had been relieved of his head coaching duties for the San Jose Sharks. The only thing surprising about this move is how quickly it happened and not the move itself. In past years, Team Teal's management team usually took a number of weeks off after a playoff elimination before making any moves or announcements. However, this time around, President Greg Jamison didn't wait to pull the trigger.

Sharks Injury News - Released

Sharks not as healthy as we'd hoped: I thought that the San Jose Sharks were generally healthy going into the playoffs and I still believe they were. However, after a grueling series with Calgary and then Dallas, Team Teal was banged up. Some of the reports released weren't surprising, while others were. Regardless, injuries are a part of the game and they shouldn't be viewed as excuses to a disappointing early exit. However, it is somewhat satisfying to know that a number of guys were hurt and not just lacking in heart.

Season Ends On Penalty Kill

Stars win series 4-2: Well, the San Jose Sharks showed a lot of heart, but in the end, they couldn't get it done. That had to be one of the most exciting/longest games I have ever watched in my life. Thanks to an absolutely amazing performance by Evgeni Nabokov, Team Teal found themselves in quadruple overtime with numerous chances to move on to a Game 7. Unfortunately, San Jose's special teams simply weren't up to par in this series and it was clearly the difference between these two evenly-matched teams.

Sharks Extend Season...Again

Stars lead series 3-2: Well, it was an uphill battle, but the San Jose Sharks pulled it off and extended their season for at least one more game. After watching them battle back from a 2-0 deficit in the third and then eventually winning it in overtime, I can now call this a series. Before, it was just a blowout, but now, if Team Teal loses tomorrow...I will still be able to hold my head up high and say that I'm a Sharks fan because they've shown me that they have heart...something that was definitely missing in the first three games of this series.

Sharks Prove Me Wrong

Stars lead series 3-1: Well, just when I thought the season was over, the San Jose Sharks prove me wrong and win a game. Thanks to some key saves by Nabokov and the continued strong play of Marleau and Michalek, Team Teal's fans get at least one more game this season. As they say in poker, all you need is a chip and a chair to still be in it, but I'm skeptically optimistic about our chances.

Set Up Those Tee Times Boys

Stars lead series 3-0: What is it that I'm feeling right now? Frustration? Disappointment? Despair? Well, the word that probably best describes my current state of mind is ANGRY. Apparently, I'm not alone. Immediately after Game 3, I received a number of angry messages from other disappointed Sharks fans. One in particular echos my sentiments quite well and I thought I'd share it. Besides, I'm too mad to blog about hockey right now.

Stars lead series 2 - 0

What's the definition of 'ownage'? Well, if you flip to the glossary of the San Jose Sharks Playbook, you will see a picture of the Dallas Stars...that's what ownage is. However, maybe I'm simplifying it too much. Ownage is winning the 50/50 battle on the boards, it's getting sticks into passing lanes, it's blocking shots, it's getting to loose pucks first, it's making the most of your opportunities, it's making the key save, it's looking like a well-oiled machine while on the road...that's what ownage is and right now...that's what Dallas is doing.

Nabokov Up for the Vezina

2007 / 2008 NHL Vezina Trophy Finalists: With all of the playoff action going on, the news about Evgeni Nabokov's nomination for the Vezina was sort of lost. A lot has been said about Nabby's strong play throughout the year and if you're a Sharks fan, I don't need to convince you that Number 20 should take the post-season award. However, with that said, let's take a look at all three of the finalists.

Sharks Are Second Round Bound

Sharks 5, Flames 3: I want to personally thank the San Jose Sharks. Not only because they won Game 7, not only because they won the series, not only because they got the job done, but also because they made it a relatively stress-free game to watch. This morning, I woke up thinking about the upcoming series finale and I actually felt butterflies...pretty ridiculous. Fortunately, Team Teal came out strong, came from behind, and came through in the end.

Sharks 0, Flames 2: Sunday morning, I thought to myself, "We need Nabby to steal tonight's game so that we can just wrap things up and head into the second round." Well, there was a shutout, but for the wrong team. Miikka Kiprusoff came up big for Calgary in a must-win game, but I have to admit, the San Jose Sharks didn't do much to make it a difficult night for the goaltender. Yes...Team Teal had a chance to move on, but instead...they just disappointed their fans.

Sharks Looking and Feeling Good

Sharks 4, Flames 3: I guess a three goal lead is never safe when it comes to the Flames. Though the San Jose Sharks led Calgary by a score of 4 - 1, the Flames came back and created some nervous moments for Team Teal fans in the last two minutes of regulation. Fortunately this time around, the Sharks got the three goal with less than 12 minutes left in the game and this didn't give Calgary enough time to complete their second amazing comeback in the first round of these playoffs.

Sharks' Big Guns Get Going

Sharks 3, Flames 2: On Tuesday night, the San Jose Sharks beat the Calgary Flames in the last few moments of regulation. This last second win ties the series at two games apiece, basically making it a three game series. Fortunately, Team Teal has the home ice advantage. However, more important than home ice advantage, it was great to see the Sharks' top offensive guns get going and put up some extremely crucial goals.

Brantt Myhres: Former Sharks Tough Guy

After the frustrating loss in Calgary, where the Sharks were thrown off of their game due to the 'rough stuff', I began to wonder why Team Teal's current pack of tough guys (Shelley, Murray, and Clowe) didn't try to get Sarich to drop the gloves. Granted, it's the playoffs and fighting is usually a rare occurrence, but when your captain gets dropped and receives a bloody nose, I think something has to happen. This lack of response led me to think about former San Jose tough guys who might have done something about the hit. The obvious ones came to mind: McSorley, Gaetz, Odgers, Nazarov, Marchment, and Parker. However, one player in particular stood out in my head and had me wondering 'what ever happened to him?'.

Sharks 3, Flames 4: After the San Jose Sharks scored three quick goals against the Calgary Flames, everyone knew what was coming. If everyone knew what was coming, then why did the "rough stuff" strategy still work?

Sharks 2, Flames 0: What do you do when you need to beat a team that's had your number all season? Well, it's simple...just have your goalie pitch a shutout. And that's exactly what Evgeni Nabokov did last night, but it wasn't easy. Thanks to a couple of amazing saves and crucial goals from the 'kids', Nabby and company were able to tie the series up at one game apiece.

Screwed By Local TV Network...Again

New name...same frustration: Some way, some how, my local sports tv network always finds a way to screw me over. If you've read my blog, you know that I absolutely hate it when games are on the 'plus' channel. Or even worse, when my Sharks are preempted by another event that happens to be taking longer than expected. Well, this was the case again last night. Comcast Sports Network - Bay Area, previously Fox Sports Network - Bay Area, did not endear themselves to a number of Sharks fans who were forced to watch A's baseball rather than the first 10 minutes of the NHL post-season.

Sharks 2, Flames 3: Last night, the Calgary Flames came to San Jose to face the Sharks in Game One/Round One of the 2007 - 2008 playoffs. Unfortunately, only a handful of Sharks showed up...or at least that's what it looked like. In front of a packed Shark Tank, Team Teal put up one of their worst performances of the season.
San Jose Sharks Playoff Schedule - Round One

Sharks faceoff against Flames: Well, the post-season is finally here and it's going to be a tough one. The Flames have had San Jose's number this year, beating Team Teal three times out of the four games played during the regular season. But as one Sharks fan reminded me, Calgary has yet to face the "new" Sharks...a team with a brand new All-Star defenseman and a whole lot of confidence (thanks to an 11 game winning streak).

Thornton Tearing It Up

Sharks 3, Coyotes 1: If the San Jose Sharks can find some way to score a goal in their very first shift for the rest of the season and playoffs, then I like our chances for making a deep run. What seems like the 5th time in the last month, Team Teal got off to a super-fast start by scoring on their very first shift of the game. Not surprisingly, it was scorching-hot Joe Thornton that got the ball rolling.

Pacific Title is in the Bag

Sharks 3, Ducks 1: With a strong win over the Anaheim Ducks, the San Jose Sharks have locked up first place in the Pacific, second place in the Western Conference, and at least two rounds with home-ice advantage. As expected, it was a tough and gritty game between the two division foes, but in the end, it was a rather convincing win by Team Teal.

Sharks Getting It Done

Sharks 3, Stars 2 OT: Even though the San Jose Sharks are still without their best winger, Jonathan Cheechoo, Team Teal is still finding a way to win games. This fact just goes to show that San Jose is deep which is very important if you want to win games...especially in the playoffs.

Cheechoo Still Out

Shot to head keeps winger out: When the San Jose Sharks take the ice tonight to take on the Dallas Stars, they will be without Jonathan Cheechoo for a second consecutive game. Number 14 has been the hottest player on Team Teal during the recent winning streak and his absence is forcing coach Ron Wilson to juggle lines. As we saw against Phoenix the other night, juggling may not be in out best interest.

Sharks Take a Night Off...Mentally

Sharks 4, Coyotes 5 OT: Last night, the San Jose Sharks played one of their worst games in a long time. That may be surprising given that they scored four goals, but if you watched, you know what I'm talking about. The defense was terrible, the goaltending was awful, the only thing that kept this game close was Joe Thornton's One-Man-Show.

Sharks 2, Ducks 1: On Friday night, the San Jose Sharks got two points closer to nailing down first place in the Pacific Division.
Sharks Win Wild One

Sharks 4, Wild 3 SO: Last night, the San Jose Sharks took on the Minnesota Wild in a very exciting game. In what could be a first round matchup, both squads did not disappoint.

Sharks Back on Track

Sharks 2, Kings 1: The worst team in the NHL, the Los Angeles Kings, made things too close for comfort last night. When the San Jose Sharks went to LA, I was expecting a 3-0 or 4-1 result. Instead, Team Teal let up a bit and gave Kings fans some hope for the last four minutes of the game. As for Sharks fans and coach Ron Wilson, it was just another reason to worry about San Jose's ability to close.

Sharks Winning Streak Ends

Sharks 1, Oilers 2 SO: Well, it had to end sooner or later and I'm glad that it happened now instead of in the playoffs. Moreover, at least the loss wasn't to Anaheim or Dallas which would result in a four point swing. But I got to admit, it burns me a little that it was Edmonton that ended our streak. In fact, had we lost to St. Louis and then beat Edmonton, I think I would be much happier about the loss.

Sharks 4, Blues 1: It isn't very often that I stop watching Sharks games early, but to be honest, the game against St. Louis was probably one of those times I should have turned off the tube to go do something more productive. After 20 minutes of play, the Sharks were looking like they would rattle off 10 goals on the night....unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

Who is Marc Savard? I was looking at the NHL stats this morning and saw that Joe Thornton was again in second place in the 'Assists Race'. I know that he's been battling the Boston Bruins' Marc Savard, but who is this guy? I never really heard much about him, but he seems to be keeping pace with arguably the best assist-man in the world. So here's a brief look at the Boston center.

Stop Trying to Jinx the Sharks!

For those of you who know me, you know that I am a bit superstitious when it comes to talking about the San Jose Sharks. To be honest, I'm a bit superstitious about almost everything. That's why one shouldn't be surprised when I say something positive about Team Teal, and then follow it up with a '*knock on wood*'. It may seem a bit childish, but that's what I do; especially during a long winning streak.

Though Team Teal picked up two goals in the first, the Minnesota Wild made sure that it wouldn't be an easy.
Sharks 6, Canadiens 4: After a long eight game road trip, I was worried that the San Jose Sharks would come home tired...too weary to put up a good game against the Eastern Conference leading Montreal Canadiens. Well, it appears that I had nothing to worry about. This game was absolutely amazing...especially if you like scoring...and who doesn't? I know that many coaches don't like high-scoring games because it means that the defense is not having a good night, but I have to believe that Coach Ron Wilson had to be a little excited deep down inside when he saw his squad put on an offensive exhibition.

Sharks 3, Red Wings 2: Friday night, the San Jose Sharks defeated the Detroit Red Wings by a final score of 3 - 2. This win extended Team Teal's current winning streak to four games. Granted, Detroit was without the services of two future Hall-of-Fame defenseman (Lidstrom and Chelios), but it was a win nonetheless. Last night, the veteran defenseman posted one assist and led the team in ice time with 24 minutes and 34 seconds. In addition, Number 51 was used in every scenario including the powerplay and penalty kill.
Losing Streak Reaches Five

Sharks 2, Devils 3: The current San Jose Sharks losing streak is bad. Simply bad. The team out on the ice seems so foreign to me. How can Team Teal be playing so terribly? Is everyone worried about who's going to be around after the trade deadline? Or, do we just suck? No matter what the cause, these five losses are hurting the Sharks in the standings AND in the trade marketplace.

Where Are All the Trades?

Slow trade season so far: The NHL trade deadline is next Tuesday, giving GMs a little under seven days to make a move to improve their team for this year (or next year). Compared to past seasons, it sure feels like there haven't been many trades. According to NHL.com, there have only been 13 trades since January 1st. Morover, the biggest names that came out of these trades have been Modry, Stillman, Commodore, Tarnstrom, and Shelley...not really jaw droppers are they?

San Jose 0 for 2 in New York: After losing to both the Rangers and the Islanders, San Jose has now dropped four in a row. I was hoping that time away from home would get Team Teal back into work mode, back to where they know how to win...boy was I wrong.

Strong Effort...No Results

Sharks 3, Flames 4 OT: Tuesday night, the San Jose Sharks played a quick and physical game, but lost. After putting 43 shots on net, Team Teal walked away a loser. The Calgary Flames have now beat San Jose in three consecutive games. The Sharks dominated for nearly the entire game, but just couldn't close the deal. It was especially frustrating that Calgary tied the game with less than a minute left...something that San Jose couldn't do the last time these two teams met.

Sharks 4, Predators 3: Given Jonathan Cheechoo's slow start this season, Number 14 was bound to have a better second half.
Sharks 2, Blue Jackets 1 OT: On Friday night, the San Jose Sharks were dominated for most of the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Fortunately for Team Teal, Evgeni Nabokov was absolutely on his game. Thanks to Number 20's outstanding performance, the Sharks were somehow able to walk away with two points.

Theodore Steals The Show

Sharks 1, Avs 3: Wednesday night was just one of those games that was physical, tough, and a little bit nasty. Cheap shots, high-sticks, cross-checks, fighting...the game had all of the rough stuff going. Granted, the referees could be blamed for not taking control because they did miss a lot of calls...a LOT of calls, but it made for a very entertaining game.

Nabby...What was that?

Sharks 4, Flames 5: On Wednesday night, the San Jose Sharks lost to the Calgary Flames by only one goal. Though almost everyone on Team Teal was at fault for letting in five goals, one player in particular sticks out to me...Nabokov. Number 20 has simply been amazing this year; especially this past All-star weekend, but last night, he looked bad. Loose pucks, big rebounds, and one big give-away...handing over the puck to Owen Nolan and allowing him to score what was basically an empty netter.

Nabokov Strong in Goal

Sharks 3, Oilers 0: Nabby continues to look sharp in net. First, he shut-out the East All-Stars during his twenty minutes of play in the NHL All Star game. Then last night, in front of a national audience on the Versus Channel, he stopped all thirteen shots he faced in the win against the Edmonton Oilers. It was his sixth shut-out of the season. Nabby gave a lot of credit to how the team played in front of him. But with Garon’s strong play at the other end, and one or two bad bounces, the result could have been different. With our recent history at Rexall Place, the Sharks probably needed the shut-out to prevent the Oilers and their fans from getting into the game.

Look For Strong Second Half

Consistency is needed: It has been almost six weeks since my last post. Why? Well, as we all know, the Holiday Season can be tough. The mad scrambles to the mall, the numerous holiday gatherings, and then the eventual Holiday Season Hangover...when it just feels like torture to go back to work. Granted, these are weak excuses, but they're true. Along with many other things, blogging fell by the wayside for me, but it is time for a comeback. For me...and the San Jose Sharks.

Sharks 2, Ducks 1 SO: Less than 24 hours after losing first place to the Dallas Stars, the San Jose Sharks had to clear their heads and take on the Anaheim Ducks. Not only did Team Teal have weary legs, but they had to deal with a pumped-up Anaheim squad who welcomed back all-star defenseman Scott Niedermayer.
Sharks 2, Stars 4: On Saturday afternoon, the San Jose Sharks got off to a strong start against the Dallas Stars. As both teams went to the body early, the game became more and more chippy. Unfortunately, Team Teal's penalty kill, which has been so strong all year, had a busy night. On six powerplay opportunities, Dallas scored twice which was the difference in the game.

Sharks 2, Kings 1: San Jose has been given a very odd schedule by the NHL; consequently, Sharks fans were stuck waiting a week between games. This gave seven days to stew about the loss to Anaheim, seven days to look forward to an opportunity to exact revenge on a division foe. Unfortunately, like Spider Man 3, the loss to the Los Angeles Kings was a let down, and it officially puts Team Teal back on their roller coaster of a season (see San Jose Sharks Win-Loss Chart).

San Jose Owns Phoenix...Again

Sharks 6, Coyotes 0: Earlier in the season, I blogged about how the Sharks were barely winning games that could have gone either way, and how I wanted them to dominate like a real Stanley Cup contender. Well, when they play the Phoenix Coyotes, I get what I want.

Sharks Defeat Stars in Shootout

San Jose gives a point away: The San Jose Sharks extended their winning streak to three games by defeating the Dallas Stars on the road. With an early lead, Team Teal looked like they were on their way to an easy two points. However, the Dallas Stars weren't going to go down without a fight.

Gretzky Fined and Boynton Suspended

NHL adds insult to Phoenix's injury: After being embarrassed by the San Jose Sharks in a 5-0 loss, the Phoenix Coyotes now have to deal with off-ice issues as well. Thanks to a very bad decision made in the last moments of the game Monday night, Nick Boynton now has to serve a one game suspension and his coach, Wayne Gretzky, must pay a fine.

Sharks Dominate...at HOME?!

Sharks 5, Coyotes 0: On Monday night, the San Jose Sharks defeated the Phoenix Coyotes with a very strong showing on both the offensive and defensive side of the puck. With all of the lines going and Evgeni Nabokov stopping 25 shots on net, the Coyotes had no chance at winning this one.

Sharks 2, Ducks 3 SO / Sharks 4, Coyotes 1: Over the weekend, the San Jose Sharks played .500 hockey again, however, Team Teal did pick up three points to maintain first place in the Pacific Division. With a shootout loss to Anaheim and then a sound win over Phoenix, San Jose pushed it's home record to 2-4.

Injured knee puts tough winger out of commission: On October 27th, Ryane Clowe injured his knee in a loss against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The extent of the injury was unknown for a while; in fact, even recent reports state that his ACL is "damaged" which doesn't really clear things up. However, one thing is for sure, Number 29 will be out for a while.

Lose One, Win One...Anyone Surprised?

Sharks 2, Kings 5 / Sharks 3, Kings 1: In San Jose's first divisional back-to-back this year, they lost one and won one. Moreover, the loss was at home while the win was on the road. Hmm...can't say that I'm surprised. Through the first month of the 2007 - 2008 season, this has been the trend. Fortunately, the rest of the Pacific isn't doing much better and the Sharks find themselves in first place again.

If a stick is found to be "illegal", then the offending player will be assessed a two minute minor penalty. However, did you know that there is an official request submission process, and that offending players can get fined and suspended? Did you also know that if the team that requested the measurement is proven wrong, then they get a two minute penalty and a fine?

San Jose Sharks Have The Talent

The young Sharks are hungry: Preseason is a great opportunity to test line combinations, give rookies a taste of the NHL, and work off the summer rust. Unfortunately, the Sharks lost in a shootout last night, but after reading notes about the preseason opener against the Kings, one thing stood out in my mind: the Sharks organization is really deep.

San Jose Sharks' New Jerseys

A review of the new sweaters: Well, the new Sharks jerseys are out and I have mixed feelings about them. Initially, I thought they looked terrible. A weird mix of new design features, laid out in an old school format. However, after talking with other Sharks fans and seeing the jerseys in action from the Teal and White game, the teal ones are starting to grow on me. Unfortunately, I'm still not a fan of the white jerseys. At any rate, here's my two cents on the new sweaters...the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Ryane Clowe News Article

"Big winger talks about the upcoming season": I found a very interesting article on Ryane Clowe which discusses his journey to the NHL and the desire it will take to improve on his breakout season last year. More importantly, you should take a look at the comments at the end of the article. Clowe's dad and two aunts chime in, along with other locals. It really proves that there is strong hometown support around Number 29.

San Jose Sharks Store Frustration

Why is it so hard to get some help? As a loyal San Jose Sharks fan, I decided to take a leap of faith and pre-order an authentic jersey before having ever seen it. At $250, it's not chump change. Unfortunately for me, it's been a rough ride trying to get someone to confirm my order.

Jeremy Roenick is a San Jose Shark?!

17-year veteran is coming to San Jose: Jeremy Roenick is one of those players that I love to hate, but respectfully so. He has always played tough (even in All-Star games) and was, at one point, a true NHL star. However, as his age caught up with him, he became more well-known for his skills during interviews. With this ability in front of a camera, JR seemed destined for the broadcast booth this year...but not quite yet.

Sharks' captain to receive $6 Million per year:The San Jose Sharks locked up Patrick Marleau for two more years which means that the Sharks' Captain will be around till 2010. Though Doug Wilson didn't sign any big name free agents over the off season, he sure did open up the purse strings to keep the Sharks on course towards a Stanley Cup.

Back From the Off Season

Time to shake off the rust and start typing again: After an early exit from the playoffs, like Doug Wilson, I had to take some time off to think and contemplate before speaking out to the public. He took a few weeks, while I took the entire off season. Just kidding. Actually, I spent a lot of time catching up on other projects. But don't get me wrong, I've been following Team Teal over the summer and here is my list of top things that I would have blogged about, but just didn't.

Detroit Has the Legs

Red Wings 3, Sharks 2 OT: The Detroit Red Wings stole Game Four from the San Jose Sharks making the Western Conference Semi-finals a best out of three series. After running up a two goal lead, San Jose let Detroit come back very late in both the second and third periods. These last second goals seemed to put doubt into the minds of the Sharks players and it was evident in the overtime period. As for Detroit, their heart and strong will to survive made them look like the younger team Wednesday night.

Red Wings 1, Sharks 2: On Monday night, the San Jose Sharks were able to take the 2 - 1 series lead from the Detroit Red Wings in Game Three of the Western Conference Semi-finals. Thanks to hard work and stellar goaltending, the Sharks battled back from an early one goal deficit. Though Detroit did a lot of banging throughout the game, San Jose's larger bodies were the ones left standing.

Sharks Lack Killer Instinct

Sharks 2, Red Wings 3: The San Jose Sharks are coming home to the Bay Area with the series tied against the number one seeded Detroit Red Wings. Usually, I'd be happy; after taking Game One, the Sharks now have home ice advantage with three of the next possible five games set to start in San Jose. However, after Game Two, I was not happy at all...I was extremely disappointed. The only thing that stunk worse than the octopi being thrown on the ice was San Jose's third period effort.

Canucks Fan for a Night

Nobody has more faith in the San Jose Sharks than I do; I honestly believe that the men in teal can beat any team on any given night as long as they play to their potential. However, with that said, I really want to play the Detroit Red Wings, rather than the Anaheim Ducks, in Round Two of the playoffs. As a result, I am going to be rooting for the Vancouver Canucks, but just for tonight.

Bigger Preds Now Need to Get Smarter

If you watched the series between the San Jose Sharks and the Nashville Predators, you know that it was a very physical five games. Over the past year, the Preds have added size and skill to their team which helped them dominate throughout the regular season. Fortunately, the NHL's largest team (San Jose) matched up well with the newly re-sized squad from Nashville. Now, if Predators fans want to see their team go deeper in the post-season next year, they better hope that Nashville gets smarter as well as bigger.

Nashville Weary or Just Planning Ahead?

According to an article posted on NHL.com, Coach Barry Trotz of the Nashville Predators made their practice yesterday an optional one. As a result, not many players showed up. However, Coach Ron Wilson of the San Jose Sharks decided to put the men in teal through a rigorous practice. This scenario brings in to mind one major question: During the playoffs, is it smarter to rest or to practice?

At the trade deadline, the San Jose Sharks picked up defenseman Craig Rivet from the Montreal Canadiens and Bill Guerin from the St. Louis Blues. I was very excited to hear that Guerin was coming to San Jose, but I was a bit disappointed when the dust settled and the only defensive addition was Rivet who has often been considered as a number three defenseman. Fortunately for Team Teal, the new Sharks d-man is playing like a number one.

San Jose Sharks Favored Tonight

I found an article this morning that did a good job of recapping the first two games between the San Jose Sharks and the Nashville Predators. The most interesting part of the article was about the odds on tonight's game and the series as a whole. However, what was a bit surprising is that the Predators are still favored to win the series.

Sharks Lacked Passion

Predators tie the series 1 - 1: Last night's game felt eerily familiar...let's take a look at the situation. The San Jose Sharks are leading a very physical playoff series, a player goes down because of a cheap shot, and Team Teal goes on to lose the game. If you're a Sharks fan, you probably know that I'm referring to last year's playoff series against the Edmonton Oilers. Unfortunately for San Jose, that game was the beginning of the end.

A lot has been said about how the Nashville Predators added size to their lineup to combat the large bodies found on all of the other NHL rosters. In fact, some have actually said that the team re-built itself specifically to beat the San Jose Sharks. I guess after being pushed around in the 2006 playoffs, Nashville management decided to make a strong effort to beef up, especially up front. Unfortunately for Nashville's management, they failed to realize that the Sharks got bigger as well.

Sharks Earn Favorable Matchup with Loss

Sharks 3 - Canucks 4 OT: Thanks to a late goal by Jonathan Cheechoo, the San Jose Sharks locked up the fifth seed and will be heading to Nashville to open up the playoffs. Just like last year, the Sharks will be the lower seed, but they will be facing a very much improved Predators team this time around. More importantly, the Predators have a very strong home record at 28 - 8 - 5 and have beat the Sharks three times out of four chances this year. However, with that said, if I had to choose between facing the Canucks or the Predators, I'd choose the Predators.

Sharks 4 - Flames 3: Thursday night, the San Jose Sharks and the Calgary Flames matched up in a very spirited and physical game. Though Team Teal held the lead for the majority of the night, Flames Captain Jerome Iginla led a late charge; fortunately for the Sharks, it was too little too late.

My Worst San Jose Sharks Experience Ever

Sharks vs Ducks - 4.5.07: The amazing game last night had so many different elements to it that I don't know where to start. I could look at how the Sharks came back to win it in OT, I could also focus on the fight between Ryane Clowe and Shawn Thornton, or maybe discuss the move Coach Ron Wilson pulled to put Selanne in the box for an illegal stick. Better yet, maybe I can blog about how both goalies made a number of big saves in critical moments, including the Shootout. Well, by this time, I'm sure there are a ton of articles and posts out there talking about the aforementioned topics. Consequently, I’ll just share how the biggest game of the regular season was my worst San Jose Sharks experience ever.

Is It Playoff Time Already?

This morning, I opened up my inbox and found over 30 Google Alerts regarding tonight's game between the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks. Granted, this game will help determine the final standings of the Pacific Division, but it is only one game out of 82 regular season contests. What makes this game more special when compared to the other seven times the Sharks and Ducks met this year? Isn't this just another game worth two points? Well, according to all of the buzz surrounding tonight's contest, many people are saying "no".

One of My Biggest Pet Peeves

Sharks games that start late on TV: So many times have I been disappointed by numerous TV networks when it comes to starting a San Jose Sharks game on time. Whether it be a Warriors game in OT, a Stanford Basketball game that takes 30 minutes to finish the last minute of play, or a PGA event...it doesn't matter. Any time I miss the beginning of a Sharks game due to another television program, I become livid and this past Sunday's delay on NBC didn't produce a different reaction.

Sharks vs Kings - 4.1.07

Sharks put Kings in their place: Today marked the 8th and final meeting between the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings. Joe Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo combined for seven points on the afternoon paving the way for another Sharks win (final score: 6 - 2). Very similar to recent contests, the game was tight through the first period. However, for Kings fans, it was just the calm before the inevitable storm.

Top Ten Greatest San Jose Sharks: Part 4 of 4

Number 1: As I mentioned in Part 1 of my Top Ten Greatest San Jose Sharks series of posts, it was very difficult for me to narrow down my list of players. Over the years, the Sharks have had a number of notable players wear the teal jersey. In fact, there were a lot of big names that did not make my top ten that could end up in the Hockey Hall of Fame; such as Teemu Selanne or Ed Belfour. Unfortunately, neither made my list because both of their stays were rather short and they did not do much to impact the organization. However, the exact opposite can be said of my choice for Number 1...

Top Ten Greatest San Jose Sharks: Part 3 of 4

Numbers 2 through 4: As expected, a San Jose Shark will often make an impact off-the-ice as well as on-the-ice. Players participate in community events and charity functions, but this is not the off-ice impact that I am speaking of...I am referring to the impact a player has on an organization and its fans because of their on-ice play. In some cases, one single player can change the future of an entire franchise and when something like this occurs, it only makes sense for me to put them in my top four best San Jose Sharks of all time.

Marleau back on track: On Wednesday night, the San Jose Sharks defeated the Los Angeles Kings by a final score of 3 - 1. Thanks to captain Patrick Marleau and his two goals, Team Teal was able to collect two more points in the standings. With only five games left, the Sharks are quickly running out of time in their pursuit of first place Anaheim who is currently two points ahead. Fortunately for San Jose, tonight's win clinched a playoff berth regardless of whether or not they win the Pacific Division.

Top Ten Greatest San Jose Sharks: Part 1 of 4

Numbers 8 through 10: Over the years, San Jose Sharks history has been filled with both ups and downs. However, no matter how bad things were, Sharks fans have consistently remained loyal to their players in teal. The San Jose Sharks are a relatively young franchise (established 1991), but I don't think it is too early to create a Top Ten Greatest San Jose Sharks list. In fact, I found it rather tough to pick my top ten.

Sharks' Goalie Rotation

Back-to-back shutouts bring no guarantees: David Pollack's article, in today's Mercury News, takes a look at Coach Ron Wilson's current goalie situation. Even though Evgeni Nabokov has posted over 126 minutes of shutout hockey, it does not mean that he is the new official starting goalie...nor should it. Granted, Nabby has been hot lately, but he is still only 4-5-1 in his last 10 games.

Guerin Still Scoreless

Zero points in last four contests: Since the trade, Bill Guerin has played in four games with the San Jose Sharks. While adding experience and even more depth to the lineup, he has consistently played hard each and every night. Unfortunately, averaging just over two shots a game, Guerin still has yet to find the back of the net.

TwinCities.com Article

Sharks leave Wild feeling small: According to Tom Powers' article, found at Twincities.com, size played a large role in the San Jose Sharks' 3-0 victory over the Minnesota Wild. It's well-known that the Sharks are the largest team in the NHL, averaging 213 pounds per player, but what makes Team Teal even better is its skill and youth.

Sharks vs Wild - 3.6.07

Nabokov goes back-to-back: On their last stop of a three game road trip, the San Jose Sharks used speed, puck possession, and great goaltending to defeat the Minnesota Wild, 3 to 0. Most of the night, the Sharks were able to put pressure on the Minnesota defense and kept the majority of the play in the Wild defensive zone.

Sharks vs Stars - 3.4.07

Nabokov and Pavelski stop the bleeding: On Sunday afternoon, the San Jose Sharks regained their winning ways with much thanks to Evgeni Nabokov and Joe Pavelski. Team Teal showed some grit and played with a mean streak, hitting everything in sight.

Mercury News Excerpt

Coach Ron Wilson not worried: After reading today's San Jose Sharks article in the Mercury News, I had to laugh. Actually, it was more of a scoff than anything else. Regarding the recent slump, Wilson said, "I'd be scared if we were getting outplayed and out-competed, but that's not the case."

Guerin for Nieminen, Barribal, and 1st rounder (2007): The San Jose Sharks traded for Bill Guerin just under the trade deadline. This move may seem like a "rental" situation as Guerin is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
