San Jose Destroys the Calgary Flames >>

Sharks - Kings Season Series Ends in a Tie

|
Less than 24 hours after putting up 3 field goals against the Calgary Flames, the San Jose Sharks chipped in one more in the first period against Los Angeles. Along with strong goaltending and a few more timely goals, Team Teal was able to keep the Kings out of this one from start to finish. With the win, San Jose finished the season series against LA with a record of 3 - 3. More importantly, our boys in teal continue to learn how to put games away after gaining a lead.
Early in the first period, the Sharks got on the board when Patrick Marleau scored his 33rd goal of the season on the power play. With a lot of speed, Number 12 dangled the puck through the Los Angeles defense and ripped a wrister past Jonathan Quick just outside the top of the slot. Then, less than five minutes later, Dan Boyle blasted in his 10th of the season. On a night when Evgeni Nabokov was able to stop 36 of 37 shots, that is all of the offense the Sharks needed.

However, San Jose didn't stop there. In fact, Marleau went on to score his 34th goal of the season while Ryane Clowe continued his scoring ways by putting two into the net as well. Though the score was never really that close, the Kings kept on coming strong. Fortunately, Nabby and company were able to put the clamps down and keep LA from making any comeback.

With a day off tomorrow, San Jose will get some time to rest after this tough back-to-back. Next up...Anaheim on Thursday.

Game Notes:
  • After Sid the Kid tied Marleau for the league lead in goals earlier today, Patrick kept pace and put two goals between them once again.
  • Though there were a couple of times where a fight was about to start between two willing combatants, the linesmen decided to break things up on both occassions which seemed a little weird to me.
  • Out of the five goals scored tonight, three of them were on the powerplay which seems to be clicking these days.
  • Marc-Edouard Vlasic logged 22 minutes and 14 seconds of ice time against the Kings...nearly five minutes more than ice time leader Dan Boyle. Probably a strategic decision by the coaching staff given the back-to-back, but it's good to see the young defenseman take on some heavy minutes.
